Former UFC bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling demonstrated why experience matters in mixed martial arts, grinding out a clear unanimous decision victory over Youssef Zalal in the main event of UFC Fight Night at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Grappling Masterclass
Sterling's gameplan was textbook: use his superior wrestling and grappling to control the fight and take away Zalal's striking advantages. The former champion dominated the first two rounds with persistent takedowns and top control, building a comfortable lead on the scorecards. Zalal showed heart by rallying in the third round, winning it on most scorecards with improved striking and defensive wrestling.
Sterling Closes Strong
Any momentum Zalal had built evaporated in the fourth round. Sterling came out aggressively, secured back position, and controlled the entire frame. He carried that dominance into the fifth to seal a decisive victory. The scorecards read 49-46, 49-46, 48-47 in favour of Sterling, reflecting his control throughout the contest.
Other Results
On the undercard, Michelle Montague picked up a unanimous decision over former title challenger Mayra Bueno Silva in a bantamweight bout. Rafa Garcia also impressed with a clear decision victory over Alexander Hernandez. Perhaps the most exciting moment of the night came in the prelims, where Jackson McVey earned his first UFC win with a stunning first-round submission of Sedriques Dumas.
Sterling's win keeps him relevant in the featherweight division as he continues his move up in weight. The 36-year-old will be looking for a ranked opponent in his next outing as he targets a run towards another title shot.
