Boston and London Marathons 2026: Kenya Eyes Spring Marathon Dominance

The spring marathon season is upon us, and Kenya's runners are poised to continue the nation's dominance in long-distance running. The 2026 Boston Marathon takes place on April 20 (Patriots' Day), with the London Marathon following on April 26. Both races feature loaded elite fields with strong Kenyan representation.

In Boston, defending champion John Korir returns to defend his title on the iconic point-to-point course. Sharon Lokedi, the reigning women's champion, also returns to defend. The Kenyan contingent faces stiff competition, but Kenya's depth in marathon running means multiple athletes have a realistic shot at the podium in both the men's and women's races.

The London Marathon promises to be equally exciting. Defending men's champion Sebastian Sawe has predicted that a course record may be required to win again, reflecting the quality of the field. In the women's race, Ethiopian star Tigst Assefa headlines, but faces challenges from Kenya's Peres Jepchirchir, the 2025 world champion, Joyciline Jepkosgei, and the ever-reliable Hellen Obiri.

Kenya's marathon pedigree is unmatched. The country has produced the world record holder, Olympic champions, and World Marathon Major winners across generations. What makes this spring season special is the blend of established stars and emerging talent that gives Kenyan running fans multiple athletes to cheer for across both events.

Both races will be shown live in Kenya, with the Boston Marathon starting around 5pm EAT and the London Marathon at around 11am EAT. For athletics fans, this is the most exciting week of the spring running calendar — and Kenya will be at the heart of it.
