Boston Marathon 2026: Korir Smashes Course Record as Kenya Sweeps Both Titles

Kenya dominated the 130th Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20, as John Korir obliterated the course record with a staggering 2:01:52 finish while Sharon Lokedi defended her women's title in imperious fashion. It was a day that reminded the world why Kenya remains the undisputed home of distance running — and one that had Kenyan fans from Eldoret to Nairobi celebrating late into the night.

Korir's performance was nothing short of extraordinary. The defending champion broke away from the field at Heartbreak Hill in Newton, opening a 40-second lead that he never relinquished. His finishing time of 2:01:52 demolished Geoffrey Mutai's 15-year-old course record of 2:03:02 by a full 70 seconds, making it the fifth-fastest marathon in human history. All three men's podium finishers — Korir, Tanzania's Alphonce Felix Simbu (2:02:47), and Kenya's Benson Kipruto (2:02:50) — ran faster than the old record.

In the women's race, Lokedi was equally commanding. The Kenyan crossed the line in 2:18:51 to successfully defend her crown, holding off compatriot Loice Chemnung (2:19:35) with Mary Ngugi-Cooper completing an all-Kenyan women's podium in 2:20:07. It was a clean sweep that underlined the depth of talent in Kenya's women's marathon programme — a side of the sport that continues to grow in strength.

Korir earned $150,000 in prize money plus a $50,000 bonus for the course record, along with a gilded olive wreath sent from the plains of Marathon in Greece. But for the 28-year-old from Kapsabet, the numbers on the clock meant more than the cheque. In a post-race interview, Korir admitted the conditions — a chilly morning with a gusty tailwind — played into his hands, but acknowledged he never expected to run quite that fast.

The Boston double caps a remarkable period for Kenyan athletics. With the Kip Keino Classic coming up this Friday at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi — featuring Emmanuel Wanyonyi and a host of international stars under the floodlights — the momentum is firmly with Kenyan distance runners heading into a packed summer calendar. From the streets of Boston to the track at Nyayo, Kenyan running is in a golden era. Hongera sana, John na Sharon! Kenya tena juu!
