Kenya Pushes for Full Diamond League Meet as Kasarani Upgrades Near Completion
With the Kasarani Stadium renovation nearing completion and the Kip Keino Classic set for April 26, Kenya is making a strong case to host a full Diamond League meeting from 2027.

Kenya's long-held ambition to host a full Diamond League meeting is edging closer to reality as the multi-billion shilling renovation of Kasarani International Sports Complex enters its final phase. The upgraded facility, which includes a resurfaced World Athletics-certified track and expanded seating capacity, positions Nairobi as a serious contender for a permanent slot on the Diamond League calendar from 2027.
The Kip Keino Classic, scheduled for April 26 at Kasarani, serves as both a Continental Tour Gold event and an audition for the bigger prize. This year's edition features a star-studded field including Olympic champions Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Faith Kipyegon, alongside international stars who have confirmed their participation.
Athletics Kenya president Jackson Tuwei has been in discussions with Diamond League AG about the possibility. The governing body requires host cities to meet strict infrastructure, broadcast, and hospitality standards. Tuwei expressed confidence that the renovated Kasarani meets all technical requirements and that Kenya's passionate fanbase would guarantee strong attendance.
A Diamond League event in Kenya would be historic — the series has never held a full meeting in East Africa despite the region producing a disproportionate share of the world's top distance runners. Morocco currently hosts the only African Diamond League meet in Rabat, but Kenya's depth of talent and athletics culture make it a natural fit.
The Kenyan government has backed the bid, with the Ministry of Sports committing additional funding for warm-up facilities and media infrastructure around Kasarani. If successful, a Nairobi Diamond League could become one of the most atmospheric events on the athletics calendar, rivalling the energy of meets in Zurich and Eugene.
