KPL Title Race Tightens: Gor Mahia Stumble Against Tusker and Bandari as Leopards Lurk

The KPL title race has been blown wide open. Gor Mahia, who looked to be cruising towards the championship just two weeks ago, have dropped five points in their last two matches — a painful 1-0 defeat to Tusker FC at Wang'uru Stadium and a frustrating 0-0 stalemate with Bandari at Kasarani. The result? K'Ogalo's lead at the top has been trimmed to just three points, and the pressure is mounting.

The Tusker defeat was a wake-up call. The brewers, buoyed by a raucous home crowd in Kirinyaga, suffocated Gor Mahia's midfield and struck through a clinical counter-attack goal. Coach CK Akonnor admitted his side was second-best on the day, but insisted the title is still theirs to lose. The Bandari draw was arguably more frustrating — Gor Mahia had 67 percent possession at Kasarani but could not break down a disciplined defensive block.

To compound the misery, players and staff reported valuables stolen from the dressing room during halftime of the Bandari match — a security lapse at Kasarani that has drawn criticism from K'Ogalo fans and officials. The distraction clearly affected the team's second-half performance, though the club has called for an investigation rather than using it as an excuse.

AFC Leopards had a golden opportunity to close the gap but suffered their own nightmare — a humiliating 3-0 thrashing by Kenya Police FC. Captain Robinson Ambani rallied the squad afterwards, urging his teammates to keep the chase alive. With both sides faltering, Kakamega Homeboyz in third on 46 points are mathematically alive but realistically out of contention. This is a two-horse race now.

Gor Mahia sit on 58 points, AFC Leopards on 55, with eight matches remaining for both sides. The schedule favours neither — Gor Mahia still face Leopards in the return Mashemeji Derby, while Ingwe have a tricky trip to KCB and a home game against surging Tusker. Every match is now a cup final. Kenyan football has not had a title race this tight in years, and neutrals are loving every minute of it. Bingwa wa Kenya atatangazwa kwenye uwanja!
