Sabastian Sawe has etched his name into sporting immortality. The 29-year-old Kenyan demolished the men's marathon world record on Sunday at the London Marathon, crossing the finish line on The Mall in an astonishing 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds — becoming the first person in history to break the mythical two-hour barrier in a competitive race.
A Record Pulverised
Sawe's time obliterated the previous world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. The margin of destruction — 65 seconds — is almost unheard of at the elite level. While Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40 in the specially staged INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna in 2019, that effort was not recognized as an official record because of the controlled conditions. Sawe's achievement came in a mass-start, open competition, making it the first legitimate sub-two-hour marathon in history.
Three Under the Old Record
Remarkably, Sawe was not alone in his assault on the record. Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha — running his first-ever marathon — crossed the line second in 1:59:41, also dipping under two hours. Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo finished third in 2:00:28, seven seconds inside Kiptum's old mark. The top three all bettered a record that had stood for nearly three years.
The Race Unfolds
Sawe ran a negative split, covering the second half in a blistering 59 minutes and 1 second. He pulled away from Kejelcha after the 30-kilometre mark and made his decisive break in the final two kilometres, sprinting towards The Mall with the crowd roaring him home. The defending London champion had spoken before the race about targeting 1:59, and he delivered in spectacular fashion.
Kenya Celebrates
The achievement is a defining moment for Kenyan athletics. From Kipchoge's unofficial sub-two to Kiptum's 2:00:35 and now Sawe's 1:59:30, Kenyan runners have driven the marathon into a new era. Athletics Kenya president Jackson Tuwei called it the greatest single performance in the history of distance running. For Kenyan fans, this is a moment of immense national pride.
Sawe is expected to target the Berlin Marathon later this year, where the flat course could see him push the record even lower. The sub-two-hour marathon is no longer a dream — it is reality.
