The Sub-2-Hour Marathon: Who Will Break the Barrier and When?

With Kelvin Kiptum's record of 2:00:35 standing since Chicago 2023, the question is no longer if the two-hour barrier will fall but when — and which Kenyan will do it.

The Sub-2-Hour Marathon: Who Will Break the Barrier and When?

When Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40 in the Ineos 1:59 Challenge in Vienna in 2019, it was not ratified as a world record due to the use of rotating pacemakers and a car-mounted timing screen. The official barrier remains unbroken. Kelvin Kiptum's extraordinary 2:00:35 in Chicago in October 2023 brought it tantalisingly close, but the tragic loss of Kiptum in February 2024 left the marathon world mourning and the record frozen in time.

Current Contenders

Three runners stand out as genuine sub-2:00 threats in 2026. Ethiopia's Sisay Lemma, the 2024 Boston and 2025 London Marathon champion, has been the most consistent marathoner over the past 18 months. His personal best of 2:01:48 suggests the fitness is there, though some question whether he possesses the explosive closing speed needed for the final three kilometres of a record attempt.

Kenya's Alexander Mutiso Munyao broke through with a 2:01:56 in Valencia and a dominant win in Tokyo in March 2026. At 25, he has the youth and ambition to push boundaries. His coach, Claudio Berardelli, has reportedly designed a training programme specifically targeting a sub-2:01 attempt at the Berlin Marathon in September.

And then there is Kipchoge himself. At 41, the GOAT's best days are behind him competitively, but his understanding of pacing, mental fortitude, and race-craft remain unmatched. If a sub-2:00 attempt is ever orchestrated under exhibition conditions again, Kipchoge would likely be involved in some capacity — if not as the runner, then as a mentor and pacemaker.

The Course Question

Berlin remains the most likely venue for a record. Its flat, fast course has produced 11 of the last 15 men's marathon world records. Chicago, where Kiptum set the current mark, is another candidate, though the unpredictable October weather makes it riskier. A surprise contender is Valencia, whose circuit-style course and November timing have produced fast times in recent years.

Technology and Regulations

World Athletics continues to tighten shoe technology regulations, but the current generation of carbon-plated super shoes still provides a significant advantage over the footwear available even five years ago. The estimated benefit is 2-3% energy return, which translates to roughly 2:30 over a full marathon. Combined with improved nutritional strategies and altitude training, the physiological ceiling for the marathon is still being pushed upward.

When Will It Happen

The consensus among sports scientists is that the sub-2:00 marathon will happen in official competition within the next five years. The most likely scenario is a specially paced race at a major marathon — Berlin or Chicago — where weather, pacemaking, and the athlete's fitness all align perfectly. Whether it is Munyao, Lemma, or someone yet to emerge, one thing is certain: the breakthrough will almost certainly come from an East African runner, and Kenya's chances are as strong as anyone's.
