Eliud Kipchoge, widely regarded as the greatest marathon runner in history, has been appointed as a Global Ambassador for World Athletics. The announcement, made at a ceremony in Monaco on Saturday, marks the beginning of a new chapter for the 41-year-old Kenyan icon following his retirement from competitive athletics earlier this year.
The role
As Global Ambassador, Kipchoge will focus on three key areas: promoting distance running in developing countries, supporting youth athletics programmes across Africa, and advocating for sustainability in sport. He will work alongside World Athletics president Sebastian Coe to develop grassroots running initiatives, with a particular emphasis on East Africa and the next generation of Kenyan distance runners.
Kipchoge's legacy in numbers
Kipchoge's competitive career is one of the most decorated in athletics history. Two Olympic marathon gold medals in Tokyo 2021 and Paris 2024, the first sub-two-hour marathon at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in 2019, a world record of 2:01:09 set in Berlin in 2022, and 17 major marathon podium finishes. His influence extended beyond results — his philosophy of discipline, humility, and continuous improvement inspired millions worldwide.
Youth development focus
Speaking at the ceremony, Kipchoge emphasised his passion for nurturing young talent. He outlined plans to establish training camps in Eldoret and Iten that would provide structured coaching, education support, and nutrition guidance for promising young runners from disadvantaged backgrounds. The initiative will be funded through a combination of World Athletics resources and Kipchoge's own foundation.
Kenya's reaction
The appointment has been warmly received across Kenya. Athletics Kenya president Jackson Tuwei described it as a fitting recognition of Kipchoge's contribution to the sport. Social media reaction from Kenyan fans was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing pride that their greatest sporting icon will continue to shape the future of athletics globally. For Kenyan running, Kipchoge's transition from athlete to ambassador feels like a natural and welcome evolution.
