The seventh Absa Kip Keino Classic delivered a night for the ages under the floodlights of Nyayo National Stadium on April 24. Ferdinand Omanyala brought the house down with a 9.96-second victory in the men's 100 m, holding off South Africa's Rivaldo Roberts (10.12) and Canada's Aaron Brown (10.15) to reclaim his Continental Tour crown on home soil.
Gabby Thomas was the evening's standout performer. The American sprint star won the women's 100 m in 11.01 seconds before returning to demolish the 200 m field in 21.89 — a world-leading time and a new meet record. Cambrea Sturgis pushed her all the way in 21.93, while Kenya's Millicent Ndoro set a personal best of 23.21 in third. Thomas's double victory cemented her status as the woman to beat heading into the World Championships in Beijing.
Emmanuel Wanyonyi's step up to the 1 500 m was the most intriguing experiment of the night. The world and Olympic 800 m champion ran a controlled, intelligent race to win in 3:34.11 — a personal best and a clear signal that he has the range to compete at the highest level over the longer distance. Reynold Cheruiyot (3:34.73) and Kyumbe Munguti (3:36.21) completed a Kenyan podium.
South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile produced the upset of the night in the men's 200 m, clocking a lifetime best 19.77 to beat Jamaica's Brian Levell (19.93). In the field events, Canada's Ethan Katzberg threw 82.43 m in the hammer for a world lead, while compatriot Camryn Rogers dominated the women's hammer with 80.03 m. Kenya's Kelvin Kimtai Loti won the 800 m in 1:43.63, and Diana Wanza claimed the women's 5 000 m with a PB of 15:28.91.
The floodlit format proved a resounding success, with the Nyayo crowd creating an electric atmosphere that rivalled any stadium in world athletics. As the Continental Tour Gold series continues, the Kip Keino Classic has firmly established itself as one of the calendar's must-watch meetings.
