Kip Keino Classic 2026: Omanyala, Gabby Thomas and Wanyonyi Light Up Nairobi

For the first time in its seven-year history, the Absa Kip Keino Classic is going Prime Time. The main programme at Nyayo National Stadium runs from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. under floodlights, a symbolic upgrade that reflects just how far Kenya's flagship Continental Tour Gold meeting has come since its pandemic-era debut in 2020.
The headline acts are impossible to ignore. Ferdinand Omanyala, fresh from clocking 9.98 seconds to win the Addis Ababa Grand Prix on April 15, returns to the venue where he famously set the African 100 m record of 9.77 in 2021. He faces stiff competition from Canada's Aaron Brown, American Brandon Hicklin and South Africa's Gift Leotlela — but Nairobi's thin air and home support have historically been Omanyala's secret weapons.
American sprint queen Gabby Thomas, who owns Olympic and world titles over 200 m, lines up in the women's 100 m. If she dips below 10.80 on Kenyan soil, it would be a statement of intent ahead of the World Championships in Beijing later this year.
Perhaps the most intriguing entry is Emmanuel Wanyonyi. The reigning world and Olympic 800 m champion is stepping up to the 1 500 m for the first time at a major Continental Tour meet. He joins a stacked field that includes compatriots Reynold Cheruiyot, Timothy Cheruiyot, Brian Komen and Abel Kipsang, plus American champion Jonah Koech. If Wanyonyi can challenge sub-3:30, the distance world will take note.
World champion Lilian Odira headlines the women's 800 m, while the field events feature Ethan Katzberg chasing consecutive hammer victories and a nostalgic javelin clash between Julius Yego and 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Röhler. Two hundred athletes across 18 events — all under floodlights. Nairobi has never seen anything quite like it.
Kenyan bettors can find markets on selected athletics events at leading bookmakers like Betika, which offers competitive odds on major track and field competitions. Whether you are backing Omanyala to break 9.90 or Wanyonyi to win on his 1 500 m debut, the Kip Keino Classic promises edge-of-seat action under the Nairobi night sky.
