Kenya Shujaa Finish Seventh at Hong Kong SVNS After France Playoff Win

Kenya Shujaa wrapped up their Hong Kong SVNS campaign with a seventh-place finish after dispatching France 21-7 in the placement playoff at Kai Tak Sports Park on Sunday. While the final result offered a measure of consolation, Coach Kevin Wambua's squad will know that their performances across the tournament told a mixed story — one of promise, but also of familiar frailties that continue to hold Kenya back at the elite level.

The campaign opened with a difficult 14-5 defeat to Australia, where Shujaa struggled to convert possession into points against a well-drilled Wallabies outfit. Things got tougher in their second pool match against New Zealand, who ran in four tries in a 28-12 victory that underlined the gap between Kenya and the traditional sevens powerhouses. The twin defeats meant Kenya missed out on the cup quarter-finals.

However, Shujaa showed their character in the lower bracket, producing a spirited display against France in the seventh-place playoff. Three well-worked tries sealed a comfortable 21-7 victory that at least ensured the team returned home with something positive to build on. The result also helped Kenya's standing in the overall SVNS 2 table as they continue to chase promotion to SVNS 1 for next season.

The bigger picture for Kenya Sevens remains the promotion race. Two legs remain on the calendar — Valladolid from May 29-31 and Bordeaux from June 5-7 — and both tournaments will be crucial in determining whether Shujaa can secure their place back in the top tier. After impressing at the start of the Hong Kong campaign with that memorable opening win over USA, the challenge is maintaining that level of performance across an entire tournament rather than producing it in flashes.

For the loyal Shujaa faithful who stayed up through the night to watch the Hong Kong action, the tournament was a microcosm of the Kenya Sevens experience — moments of brilliance surrounded by stretches of inconsistency. But seventh in Hong Kong is a platform, not a ceiling. With the right preparation and squad management, those final two legs in Spain and France could be where Kenya's season is truly defined. Mbele Shujaa!
