NBA Finals 2026 Preview: Celtics vs Nuggets Championship Series Breakdown
The Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets meet in a blockbuster NBA Finals rematch, with Jayson Tatum seeking back-to-back titles and Nikola Jokic chasing his second ring.

The NBA Finals are set, and they could not be more compelling. The Boston Celtics, defending champions and owners of the league's best regular-season record at 62-20, face the Denver Nuggets, who stormed through the Western Conference playoffs with a 12-3 record. It is a rematch of what many consider the best Finals series of the decade — the 2024 classic that Boston won in seven games.
Celtics: The Defending Dynasty
Boston's roster is a masterclass in continuity. Jayson Tatum has elevated his game to MVP level this season, averaging 28.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists. Jaylen Brown remains the perfect complement — a two-way wing who can guard the opponent's best perimeter player while creating 22 points per game of his own. The supporting cast of Derrick White, Kristaps Porzingis, and Jrue Holiday gives Joe Mazzulla arguably the deepest roster in the league.
Their playoff run has been efficient rather than spectacular — a five-game series against Miami, a sweep of the Knicks, and a six-game battle with Milwaukee in the Eastern Conference Finals where Giannis pushed them to the brink before Tatum took over in Games 5 and 6.
Nuggets: Jokic's Revenge Tour
Nikola Jokic is playing the best basketball of his career at age 31. His playoff averages of 29.1 points, 13.2 rebounds, and 10.8 assists border on the absurd — he is essentially averaging a triple-double through 15 games. Jamal Murray has rediscovered his 'Blue Arrow' form with several clutch performances, and Aaron Gordon's defence has been elite throughout the postseason.
Denver's path was more challenging. They needed seven games to get past Minnesota in the second round, with Jokic's 42-point, 14-rebound masterpiece in Game 7 standing as the performance of the playoffs so far. A six-game series against Oklahoma City in the Conference Finals was marked by tactical adjustments from coach Michael Malone that neutralised Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Key Matchup: Tatum vs Gordon
Aaron Gordon will draw the primary assignment on Tatum, and it is a fascinating matchup. Gordon's combination of length, athleticism, and IQ makes him one of the few defenders in the league who can genuinely bother Tatum. In the 2024 Finals, Gordon held Tatum to 23 points per game on 41% shooting. Tatum will need to be more assertive in creating mismatches this time around.
Series Prediction
Home court belongs to Boston, and their depth gives them an edge in a seven-game series. But Jokic in the playoffs is a force of nature that no amount of game-planning can fully contain. Celtics in 7 feels right — another classic that goes the distance, with Tatum winning Finals MVP for a second consecutive year.
