Cavaliers 101-96 Knicks: Mitchell Dagger Three Seals Game 1 in the East

The Eastern Conference Finals opened with a classic. Cleveland Cavaliers survived a furious New York Knicks comeback to win Game 1 101-96 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, with Donovan Mitchell's dagger three-pointer sealing the victory in the final minute. It was a game that showcased everything compelling about playoff basketball — defensive intensity, momentum swings, and ice-cold shot-making when it mattered most.

Mitchell's masterclass

Donovan Mitchell finished with 33 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals, delivering his best performance of the 2026 playoffs. After a quiet first half where he scored just 11 points, Mitchell exploded for 22 in the second half, including the decisive three-pointer over Josh Hart with 28 seconds remaining. His ability to elevate in the biggest moments is what separates him from other All-Star guards, and tonight he showed why Cleveland traded everything to build around him.

Brunson's brilliance not enough

Jalen Brunson was extraordinary in defeat, scoring 31 points and dishing 9 assists while carrying the Knicks offence through difficult stretches. His step-back jumper is virtually unguardable, and he created open looks for teammates consistently. But the Knicks needed more from their supporting cast — OG Anunoby was limited to 12 points on poor shooting, and Julius Randle struggled against Evan Mobley's length, finishing with just 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting.

Mobley's defensive masterpiece

Evan Mobley may have been the most impactful player on the floor despite scoring only 14 points. His defence on Randle was suffocating — contesting every shot, blocking two attempts, and forcing four turnovers. Mobley's ability to guard multiple positions allowed Cleveland to switch everything defensively, and his 11 rebounds and 3 assists showed his all-around contribution. At 24, he is emerging as one of the league's premier two-way players.

The fourth quarter

New York trailed by 14 early in the fourth quarter before mounting a stunning 18-4 run that tied the game at 93-93 with two minutes remaining. Madison Square Garden may have been 500 miles away, but the travelling Knicks fans made their presence felt. However, Cleveland's composure down the stretch was decisive. Darius Garland hit a floater to retake the lead, Mitchell buried the dagger three, and Mobley's block on Brunson's drive sealed it.

Series outlook

Game 1 suggests this series will be a war of attrition. Both teams have elite defences and star guards capable of producing magic. The Knicks' physical toll from their seven-game Atlanta series is a concern — fatigue showed in the fourth quarter before the adrenaline-fuelled comeback. Cleveland's depth and rest advantage could prove decisive over a seven-game series. Game 2 is Saturday in Cleveland.
