Gor Mahia's Road to Glory: The Complete 2025-26 KPL Season Review
From a shaky start with three defeats in six games to lifting the trophy with three matches to spare, Gor Mahia's 2025-26 KPL campaign was a story of resilience, tactical evolution, and the emergence of Dennis Omala as the league's best player.

When the 2025-26 Kenya Premier League season kicked off in August, Gor Mahia carried the weight of expectation but also genuine uncertainty. A squad reshuffle during the off-season had seen several stalwarts depart, replaced by hungry young talent from lower divisions and one or two shrewd signings from East African neighbours. Head coach Jonathan Omwenga promised attacking football and a return to dominance. Thirty-four matchdays later, he delivered on every word — Gor Mahia are champions with 73 points, their most commanding title-winning campaign in half a decade.
A Shaky Start: Matchdays 1-6
The opening month was anything but smooth. A draw against newly promoted Mara Sugar on matchday one set alarm bells ringing. Losses to Shabana and Kakamega Homeboyz in the first six games left K'Ogalo languishing in seventh place with just 10 points from six matches. Critics questioned Omwenga's decision to blood so many youngsters at once, with midfielder Dennis Omala — who would later win the Player of the Year award — still finding his feet in the starting eleven.
Defensive frailties were the main concern. Gor conceded nine goals in those opening six rounds, struggling with a new centre-back partnership that lacked cohesion. The January transfer window was still months away, and Omwenga needed solutions from within.
Finding Their Stride: Matchdays 7-15
The turning point came in a Mashemeji Derby on matchday seven. Trailing AFC Leopards 1-0 at half-time in front of a hostile Kasarani crowd, Gor Mahia produced a second-half masterclass. Omala scored twice and Kevin Ochieng added a third in stoppage time for a 3-2 win that ignited the season. From that moment, K'Ogalo went on an eight-match unbeaten run that lifted them from mid-table to the summit by matchday 14.
Omwenga's tactical adjustment was crucial — he switched from a flat 4-4-2 to a 3-5-2 that gave Omala licence to roam between the lines while providing extra cover at the back. The goals-against column shrank dramatically: just five conceded across matchdays 7 to 15. Keeper Brian Odhiambo grew in confidence, pulling off a string of saves that earned him the November Player of the Month award.
The Title Race Heats Up: Matchdays 16-25
AFC Leopards were never far behind. Under their own ambitious coach, Ingwe matched Gor Mahia result for result through the middle portion of the season, and the gap at the top rarely exceeded three points. Kenya Police, buoyed by 12 draws that made them the hardest team to beat, lurked in third and briefly threatened both leaders around matchday 20.
Gor's schedule between matchdays 20 and 25 included fixtures against Tusker, Bandari, Kenya Police, and AFC Leopards — four of the top seven sides. They emerged with three wins and a draw, the decisive moment being a 1-0 victory over Leopards on matchday 23 courtesy of an Omala free-kick that curled into the top corner. That result opened a five-point gap that Ingwe never fully closed.
Kakamega Homeboyz, the league's top scorers with 49 goals across the season, kept the neutrals entertained but were too inconsistent defensively to sustain a genuine title challenge. Tusker, rebuilding after years of dominance, settled into fifth place and focused on securing continental qualification.
Sealing the Deal: Matchdays 26-34
By matchday 28, Gor Mahia's lead stood at six points. The mathematics were firmly in their favour, but Omwenga refused to let standards drop. A 2-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks on matchday 31 officially sealed the championship with three games to spare, sparking wild celebrations among the Green Army faithful who had packed Nyayo Stadium.
The final three matches were played in an atmosphere of celebration rather than tension. Gor finished on 73 points — 22 wins, 7 draws, 5 defeats — with a goal difference of +34 that was comfortably the best in the division. Omala finished as joint-top scorer, and the defence that had looked so shaky in August ended the season as the league's meanest, conceding just 24 goals.
Key Players
Dennis Omala was the heartbeat of the campaign. His 16 goals and 8 assists from an advanced midfield role made him the league's most complete player. Goalkeeper Brian Odhiambo kept 14 clean sheets. Captain Collins Sichenje marshalled the back line after that rocky start and barely missed a minute in the second half of the season. On the flanks, winger Tyson Otieno provided pace and directness that stretched every defence in the league.
What It Means
For Gor Mahia, this title cements their status as Kenya's premier club. It is a triumph of coaching, youth development, and collective belief over big-spending rivals. For the KPL as a whole, the 2025-26 season delivered compelling drama from top to bottom — Sofapaka's painful relegation battle, Mara Sugar's impressive debut in the top half, and a scoring bonanza from Homeboyz that kept fans glued to every weekend's fixtures. With the club now turning its attention to the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds, K'Ogalo's story is far from over.
