Gor Mahia Clinch KPL 2026 Title on Matchday 31

Gor Mahia are the 2026 Kenya Premier League champions. A clinical 2-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday confirmed what has seemed inevitable for several weeks — K'Ogalo's 21st league title and their most dominant campaign in recent memory.

How they did it

Goals from Benson Omala in the 34th minute and substitute Austin Odhiambo in the 78th sealed the deal in front of 28,000 jubilant fans. Gor Mahia have now won 22 of their 31 league matches this season, drawing six and losing just three. Their 72 points from 31 games is a record-breaking pace, and they could still push past the 80-point mark if they win their remaining three fixtures.

The title race that wasn't

While AFC Leopards mounted a credible challenge in the first half of the season, Gor Mahia's consistency from January onwards proved too much. A 15-match unbeaten run from matchday 16 to 30 effectively killed the race, with Leopards dropping crucial points against Tusker and Police FC during the same stretch. Leopards sit on 69 points with three games remaining, ensuring at least a respectable second-place finish.

Coach Okumbi's vision

Head coach Jonathan Okumbi, who took charge in the off-season after his successful stint at Tusker, has transformed Gor Mahia's style of play. The high-pressing, possession-based approach has been a departure from the counter-attacking style of previous campaigns. The recruitment of Omala from abroad and the development of young midfielder Brian Onyango have been key factors in the team's dominance.

What's next

Gor Mahia will represent Kenya in the 2027 CAF Champions League preliminary rounds. With a league title already secured, Okumbi can use the remaining three fixtures to integrate younger players and test tactical variations ahead of the continental campaign. The celebrations, though, are well deserved — this has been a championship season to remember.
