Manchester City's Summer 2026 Transfer Window: The Rebuild Begins

Manchester City's 2025-26 season has been their worst in a decade. Fifth in the Premier League and eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Inter Milan, the club that once seemed invincible is now facing an identity crisis. This summer's transfer window represents the most important recruitment period since Pep Guardiola arrived in 2016.

Who's leaving

The exodus is significant. Kevin De Bruyne's contract expires and the 35-year-old is expected to join a Saudi Pro League club. Kyle Walker has already confirmed his departure after 10 years at the Etihad. Ilkay Gundogan, who returned from Barcelona last season, is set to retire. Bernardo Silva continues to be linked with a move to Paris Saint-Germain, and this time City may be willing to sell. That's four players who were central to the treble-winning squad of 2023 all leaving in a single window.

The recruitment strategy

City's transfer approach this summer is expected to focus on three positions: a creative midfielder to replace De Bruyne, a right-back to succeed Walker, and a wide forward to add pace and directness. The reported budget of around 200 million pounds reflects the scale of rebuild needed. Florian Wirtz of Bayer Leverkusen remains the dream signing in midfield, though Real Madrid are also interested. Jeremie Frimpong has been discussed as the Walker replacement, while Barcelona's Lamine Yamal would be the statement signing — though his price tag could exceed 150 million pounds alone.

Youth integration

Alongside external recruitment, Guardiola is expected to promote several academy graduates. Oscar Bobb has already established himself in the first team, while James McAtee's performances on loan at Sheffield United suggest he could be ready for a central role. Rico Lewis continues to develop as one of the most versatile defenders in Europe despite being only 21. The academy pipeline, which has been criticised for not producing enough first-team players, may finally become a genuine resource.

Can Pep rebuild?

Guardiola has never overseen a major rebuild at any of his clubs — at Barcelona and Bayern Munich he inherited strong squads, and at City he has been able to refresh gradually. This summer represents uncharted territory. His contract runs until 2028, giving him time, but the Premier League waits for no one. Arsenal, Liverpool, and a resurgent Chelsea are all strengthening. The window between now and August could define the next era of Manchester City football.
