Kenyan Footballers in Europe 2026: Season Review and Performance Tracker

The number of Kenyan footballers playing in European leagues has grown steadily over the past five years, and the 2025-26 season has seen several make significant strides. With AFCON 2027 on home soil providing extra motivation, the performances of Kenya's European-based players are being watched more closely than ever. Here is a comprehensive review of how each player fared.

Joseph Okumu — Napoli, Serie A

The standout performer among Kenyan players in Europe. Okumu started 30 of Napoli's 34 Serie A matches as Antonio Conte's side cruised to the Scudetto. Playing as the left centre-back in a back three, his composure on the ball and ability to step forward with progressive passes have been praised by Italian media. He made the Serie A Team of the Season — a first for any Kenyan footballer — and his consistency will make him the defensive cornerstone of the Harambee Stars at AFCON 2027.

Richard Odada — Red Star Belgrade, Serbian SuperLiga

Odada enjoyed his best season in European football, scoring 8 goals and providing 6 assists from central midfield as Red Star won the Serbian league title. His box-to-box energy, improved passing range, and growing leadership qualities have attracted attention from clubs in the Belgian and Dutch top flights. At 25, a move to a top-five European league feels like a matter of when, not if.

Ayub Timbe — Vissel Kobe, J-League

While not technically in Europe, Timbe's season in Japan deserves mention. The winger contributed 9 goals and 11 assists in the J-League, returning to form after injury-plagued seasons in Belgium. His pace and directness remain his greatest assets, and his performances have earned a call-up to McCarthy's recent squads. At 33, this may be his last chance to represent Kenya at a major tournament.

Eric Ouma — IF Elfsborg, Swedish Allsvenskan

The left-back had a solid if unspectacular season in Sweden. Ouma started 26 matches and contributed 3 assists, with his overlapping runs and crossing ability providing width from full-back. He remains a reliable option for the national team, though the lack of a move to a bigger league has surprised some observers given his performances at AFCON qualifying. At 29, he is in the prime of his career and may benefit from a summer transfer to increase his profile.

The next generation

Several young Kenyans are working through European academy systems. Brighton's Joseph Okoth, 19, made the bench for three Premier League matches this season — a significant milestone. PSV Eindhoven's Brian Ochieng, 18, scored 14 goals for the reserves and trained regularly with the first team. These players represent the future of Kenyan football in Europe, and their development will be crucial for sustaining the national team's competitiveness beyond the current generation.

AFCON implications

The European-based contingent will form the spine of Kenya's AFCON 2027 squad. Okumu in defence, Odada in midfield, and the experience of Timbe and Ouma on the flanks give McCarthy a core of players accustomed to high-level competition. The challenge is integrating them with the best of the KPL — players like Omala, Muguna, and Otieno who dominate domestically but have limited international exposure. Getting that blend right will determine how far Kenya can go on home soil.
