Harambee Stars' Foreign-Based Players to Watch for AFCON 2027

Kenyan football is experiencing something of a quiet revolution. While the domestic FKF Premier League continues to develop, it is the growing number of Kenyans playing professionally abroad that has given Harambee Stars fans genuine cause for optimism ahead of AFCON 2027 — a tournament Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Michael Olunga remains the talisman. The 32-year-old forward, currently with Al-Arabi SC in the Qatar Stars League, is Kenya's all-time leading scorer. Olunga joined Al-Arabi in July 2025 after leaving Al-Duhail, where he cemented his legacy as the club's all-time top scorer with 130 goals during a remarkable four-year spell. His experience at the highest level of club football in Asia makes him indispensable to Harambee Stars.

Beyond Olunga, Kenya's foreign-based contingent is growing. Players plying their trade in leagues across Europe and beyond are being tracked by coach Benni McCarthy's scouting team, which has launched a Europe-wide mission to identify eligible players of Kenyan heritage. This diaspora recruitment drive could significantly strengthen the squad ahead of the home tournament.

The advantage of hosting AFCON 2027 cannot be overstated. Automatic qualification removes the pressure of the qualifying campaign and allows McCarthy to focus entirely on building a cohesive squad. Playing on home soil in front of Kenyan fans would give Harambee Stars an enormous boost — and the nation is dreaming of a memorable run.

For Kenyan fans, tracking our players abroad has never been more exciting. With AFCON coming home, every goal scored by a Kenyan in a foreign league feels like a building block towards something special in 2027. The talent is there — the question is whether McCarthy can mould it into a team capable of competing with Africa's best.
