With AFCON 2027 on home soil drawing closer, we predict which 26 players Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy will select for the biggest tournament in Kenyan football history.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, is now less than 14 months away. For Kenya, this represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to perform on the biggest stage in African football in front of home fans. Coach Benni McCarthy has been steadily building a squad that blends European-based experience with the best of the Kenya Premier League, and the picture is becoming clearer.
Goalkeepers
Patrick Matasi remains the first choice despite turning 35, with his shot-stopping ability still among the best in East Africa. Behind him, Ian Otieno from KPL champions Gor Mahia has been outstanding domestically and offers a reliable backup. The third spot is a toss-up between Brighton academy graduate Joseph Okoth and Tusker's Arnold Origi, with Okoth's exposure to European training methods likely giving him the edge.
Defence
The back line is where McCarthy has the most options. Joseph Okumu at Napoli is the undisputed leader, a ball-playing centre-back who has established himself in Serie A. Alongside him, Joash Onyango provides aerial dominance and experience. At full-back, Eric Ouma's pace on the left and Erick Omondi's overlapping runs on the right give Kenya genuine width. The depth options include Johnstone Omurwa and rising KPL talent Collins Sichenje, who has been exceptional for Tusker this season.
Midfield
The engine room is arguably Kenya's strongest area. Victor Wanyama may be 35 but his leadership and positioning remain invaluable for tournament football. Richard Odada at Red Star Belgrade provides the energy and box-to-box running, while Kenneth Muguna's creativity from the number 10 position gives Kenya a genuine playmaker. Duke Abuya and Anthony Akumu offer additional options in the holding role.
Attack
This is where it gets exciting. Michael Olunga, Kenya's all-time top scorer with 35 international goals, leads the line. His movement and clinical finishing at Al-Duhail have only improved with age. On the wings, Ayub Timbe's directness and Cliff Nyakeya's trickery provide pace and unpredictability. The wildcard is 20-year-old Benson Omala, whose 18-goal KPL season for Gor Mahia has forced his way into contention.
The 26
Our predicted squad balances youth and experience, domestic form and international exposure. McCarthy's challenge will be managing expectations — Kenya have not competed at AFCON since 2019 and reaching the knockout rounds would represent significant progress. But with home advantage and a squad that is genuinely competitive, Harambee Stars fans have every reason to dream.
